A vapour barrier is any material that resists diffusion of moisture through the walls, floors and ceilings of buildings to reduce the buildup of moisture within the assembly. The most common method is using 6mil poly. There are many factors that contribute to the effectiveness of the vapour barrier including products, install methods, framing tactics and atmospheric conditions. Specifically, in wood construction, the need to control moisture diffusion is extremely important, be sure to properly consider your vapour barriers when constructing your project.
